Travel and Day 1 in NYC
Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
Leaving home for a new life was a whirlwind. There were so many people I wanted to see one more time, to hug one more time, to talk to one more time. This adventure approached like a tidal wave. I'm glad it's starting, but I was swept up in my flight time getting ever closer. Lots of decisions to make and lots of errands to run.
Generally, I like to pack a day ahead of time. But this time felt different. I was in a daze, in disbelief, like, Oh! I guess I'm going to New York.
Because my decision had not sunk in, I was scrambling to pack until the last minute, which had a very funny consequence:
I was concerned about the weight of my suitcase. At the last minute, I switched out my “Kate Middleton coat” in favor of more clothes.
Yep! I own 6 coats. NOT ONE of them is in New York!
I came all the way to NYC without a coat!
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it, New York, New York
I arrived in New York late at night on September 8th. I was amazed by all the lights and the New York skyline. It's SO BIG! Television makes it look like the World Trade Center and the Empire State Building are right next to each other, but they are not. A kind flight attendant told me NYC would be out the windows on the left, so I was able to switch seats and get these incredible photographs!
BEWARE of Exhaustion
I decided to spend the night in the airport because I was determined to see my new home in daylight. By 5 o'clock in the morning, I was ready to sleep in a bed. Airport chairs are not comfortable! But I alternated between dozing and running lines from the Prologue in Romeo and Juliet. However, with my tired brain, nothing stuck.
Around 6:30 in the morning, sunrise in New York, I had an excellent Lyft driver. If you are fortunate enough to get Tchamaco as your driver, you have encountered a wonderful human being. He told me all about the city-- what it's like to drive in the city. Apparently, the best view is on the BQE, the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. For those not driving, the Promenade is a great, romantic look-out point with the same view.
At the airport, I made it the entire night with my sunglasses dangling from my shirt collar. Hours later, I realized I left them in the Lyft car. I really, really want them back! I wear sunglasses all the time, so my eyes hurt without them.
That afternoon, I decided I needed food. For the next 20 minutes, I searched and searched for the house key. I always put my key on the counter. So where was it this time? Hmm... It stayed in my pocket for the entire flight and at the airport. Could I have left the key in the door? Did it drop on the floor? Did I take it to the bedroom?.... Where was that key?!.... On the keyhook by the front door, of course! See what happens when I put things away?! I can never find them.
I want to wake up in a city, that never [lets you] sleep
Around 7 in the morning, I fell into bed.... until 11, anyway.
My grand plan was to sleep, get food, study and rehearse all day.
However, if any of you remember the man on Friends singing “Morning is Here,” after the girls and guys switch apartments, that's about how I was awakened.
The man sang and sang from 11 in the morning until 7 at night.
I'm gonna make a brand new start of it, in old New York!
I stopped at a diner for an excellent breakfast of pancakes with Nutella, eggs, bacon and sausage, for about $6. Everyone at the diner was really nice. The lady behind the counter even plugged my phone in for me so it could charge, and a fellow customer welcomed me to NYC when I told the waitress it was my first day in New York!
You've gotta add syrup to pancakes that already have Nutella on them ;-) Yum!
Sometimes, life is straightforward, and you get exactly what you order! For dinner later, I ordered a Grilled Chicken Sandwich.... and that's exactly what I got. A Grilled. Chicken. Sandwich. Chicken between two pieces of bread and nothing else. Ah! The comedy of life! But I have food to eat, so I am grateful.
After breakfast, I stopped in a shop to look around. I found a shirt that says, “Goal Digger.” YES I AM! (But I didn't buy the shirt. It runs small).
First Day in NYC: Complete!
