Interview Day, September 12th

Dream.  Believe.  Achieve.  This sign is at the diner where I regularly eat my breakfast.  It's nice to start off the day with an inspiring message and a yummy breakfast.  The Pancake Combo-- eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes with Nutella is my absolute favorite!  Like Buddy the Elf in Elf, I am convinced that Syrup is an official food group!  ;-)

The flight and getting settled in were an adjustment.  I didn't really notice the 3 hour time difference.  I thought it would bother me more than it does.  However, the days do seem to race away much more quickly.

I get homesick in the mornings when it is too early to call anyone.  You're welcome for not calling you when I wake up between 3:30 and 5 in the morning your time :-)

Everything seems more glamorous in New York!  Right now, I'm staying at a place with a double-headed shower.  Is there a way to take it with me when I move into a permanent spot?

I got ready for an interview in Queens this afternoon.  It is said that everything moves faster in New York.  Maybe.  I walk faster than some New Yorkers and some tourists, but not as fast as others.  But in some respects, New York slows everything down.  Everything takes time and planning.

To get to my interview, I called for Lyft.  Another great experience!  This time, I had a driver named Sylvia.  She is excellent.  She likes the autonomy that Lyft provides.  Previously, she drove for a medical company around NYC.  To travel less than 10 miles cost about $30.  It was worth it, though.  The trains would have taken to long.

I decided to figure out the Subway on the way back.  I must have left the interview by 3:30.  It really didn't take long at all.  But there aren't any trains connecting Queens and Brooklyn, so you have to take a transfer in Manhattan.  I had to take 2 transfers.  To travel that same distance, technically less than 10 miles, took two-and-a-half hours!

I'm not complaining.  I'm just amazed.

Unlike BART with one train in one direction and one in the other, some stations have several tracks.  The station at Woodhaven, for example, can accommodate 2 express trains in the center and two local trains on each side.  It is so weird to see a train traveling right next to my train in the same direction.  I haven't figured out how to photograph it.  Maybe I can take a short video sometime.  The second train is close enough so you can see people's expressions and what they are wearing.

See.  The trains travel  between those posts, so this station can handle 4 trains.  The track in the foreground is for a local train headed to Manhattan.  The side with the blue posts closest to the people is for a local train bound deeper into Queens, and the two center spaces are for Express trains that don't stop at this station at all.

School starts tomorrow on Lucky 13.  Yes, 13 has been my lucky number for quite some time!  When I was 13 as a high school freshman, my English class was reading Romeo & Juliet.  All the girls wanted to be Juliet.  So each day, my teacher had us guess a number between 1 and 20.  I was about three-quarters of the way around the room, and I guessed Number 13.  Yes, that was the number my teacher was thinking of, so I got to read the role of Juliet that day.  And ever since, 13 has been my lucky number.

And now, the first piece I will recite/perform is the prologue for Romeo & Juliet!  How history repeats itself.

I'll post pictures and thoughts from my first day of school later tonight.  It was incredible!  Sometimes, you get a surprise lecture from someone affiliated with Sir Paul McCartney!
