Day 2: NYC Subway, Sunday, September 10, 2017

"To see what I have seen, See what I see"

Today, I decided to try to start learning the New York subway system.  It's different from BART.  Rather than going by names, like my old favorite, the Pittsburg-Bay Point train, these trains go by letters and numbers.

I got a little lost on the the way to the train station.  But Lo! I rounded the corner to find a fire station.  Hooray!

The fire truck had water flowing off of it, so I figured I could ask whomever was washing the truck.  (For privacy, I chose not to take a picture of the men, but there were about fifteen firemen on the other side of the truck!)

I chuckled.  I came all the way to New York to find lots of firemen all at once!  I (heart) FDNY!
One of the men was kind enough to give me directions.

I later found out this station was there on that day 16 years ago, but this truck that says, “To Hell and Back” was not.

Orientation went well.  It was mainly a meet-and-greet.  Fortunately, my monologue was not due.  I'm glad I have it memorized, but I'm even happier that I have a few more days to work on it!
I was only in Manhattan long enough for orientation.  Then I returned home to sleep and find food.

I did get to see Penn Station!  And look what I found!

It was really something to get off the train at Penn Station!

First Impression of NYC: On Sunday, it's like San Francisco without hills.  There are plenty of people in this section of the city, but it's not terribly crowded, not claustrophobic.  New Yorkers are really nice.  They'll talk to you if you talk to them.  A few of them even smile!

I'm ready to dive into my studies, ready to find housing, ready to have a job.
I have to leave you with a smile!  Here's a sign I saw on the train on the ride home:

Living here is a lifelong dream come true.
In my next life, remind me to dream of a bigger apartment ;-)
